The proposed Tourism Tax (VA Bill) will damage tourism in Wales. It will be a strong disincentive to visit Wales and will be detrimental to its image of openness, with a ‘welcome in the hillside’. It will hurt jobs where there are small businesses with seasonal employment. It will send the wrong signal to potential visitors. It may also raise very little money and not be worth the effort of collection. It should be suspended while further inquiries are made and a more sensible approach is taken.
The Regulatory Impact Assessment is set out in Part 2 of the Explanatory Memorandum (https://senedd.wales/media/g5ipwvwh/pri-ld16812-em-e.pdf). This includes the Welsh Government’s assessments of the financial and other impacts of the Bill and its implementation.
